We Can Trust Nature a Little More

Food Forest Ketelbroek

Groesbeek, The Netherlands

Mike Nicolaassen

Joined Chef Emile van der Staak on an early morning visit to food forest Ketelbroek, documenting the landscape behind the botanical cuisine of Restaurant De Nieuwe Winkel.

A quiet morning shaped by season, texture, and the rhythm of the forest.

This series was photographed for Restaurant De Nieuwe Winkel in Nijmegen, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its botanical gastronomy and close relationship with the surrounding landscape.

Together with Chef Emile van der Staak, we visited food forest Ketelbroek in the early morning hours, where many of the ingredients behind the restaurant’s plant-based cuisine are gathered throughout the seasons.

Moving through the forest before service hours began in the city, the morning was shaped by changing light, quiet moments, and the slower pace of the landscape itself.

Photographed at Food Forest Ketelbroek, the series connects food culture, environment, and the places where ingredients naturally grow.

Late Summer

Mookerheide

Mook, The Netherlands

Mike Nicolaassen

Photographed on the Mookerheide during the transition from late summer into early fall.

An morning shaped by fading light, earthy tones, and the slower rhythm that arrives with the changing season.

And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.

This series was photographed on the Mookerheide during the final weeks of summer, as the landscape slowly shifted toward autumn.

The softer evening light, dry heather fields, and muted earth tones naturally blended with the atmosphere of the collection. Rather than directing heavily, the series followed the pace of the environment itself. Working with changing light, movement, and the quieter moments that appeared throughout the evening.

Photographed outdoors in the Nijmegen region, the series moves between fashion, landscape, and seasonal atmosphere, focusing on the connection between clothing, environment, and the feeling of transition between seasons.

Friendship, interaction, and the energy of young people discovering new connections together.

A series photographed for the launch of the social impact project True Friend Forever.

This series was photographed for True Friend Forever, a social impact project developed together with communications agency Ubachs Full Contact.

The project invites students to explore themes around friendship, openness, and connection through shared activities and interaction. Rather than heavily directing the participants, the series follows the natural dynamics between the students themselves — moments of movement, conversation, curiosity, and connection unfolding throughout the day.

Photographed on location in the Netherlands, the series moves between education, youth culture, and documentary-style campaign photography.

Know what moves people

Mike Nicolaassen

Lasting movement starts with engaging people, and keeping them engaged.

That requires combining expertise. That’s why Invior and UBACHS/full contact are joining forces this summer in a new organization: INVIOR full contact.

To mark this moment, we created a series of images. In collaboration with fellow photographer Imke Vesters , featuring a wide range of people from across the Netherlands.
Because if you truly want to move people, you need to understand what moves them.

Nature and Design in Harmony – Shoot at the Gardens of Appeltern

Between Landscape and Design

Gardens of Appeltern

Appeltern, The Netherlands

Mike Nicolaassen

A series photographed at the Gardens of Appeltern, moving through pathways, greenery, layered textures, and the interaction between designed spaces and natural growth.

This series was photographed at the Gardens of Appeltern, where landscape design, nature, and seasonal atmosphere come together across more than two hundred model gardens.

Moving through pathways, greenery, and quieter corners of the park, the series follows the changing rhythm of the environment throughout the day — shifting light, layered textures, and the interaction between designed spaces and natural growth.

Rather than focusing on single elements, the series observes how landscape and design naturally move together within the gardens themselves.

The Soul of Black & Blue – A Tribute to Timeless Craftsmanship

Timeless Craftsmanship

Mike Nicolaassen

Stepping into Black & Blue in Nijmegen is like stepping into a story—one woven from rugged denim, worn leather, and a deep appreciation for craftsmanship.

As a lifestyle photographer, I had the privilege of capturing the essence of this space, where every detail speaks of tradition and authenticity.

From selvedge denim stacked high to well-worn Red Wing boots and classic Stetson hats, the store is a haven for those who value quality built to last. But it’s more than just the gear—it’s the brotherhood, the passion, and the lifestylethat make this place special.

The smell of leather, the sound of denim being folded, the shared stories between like-minded souls—this is where heritage meets modern-day grit.

Shooting here wasn’t just about photographing products; it was about capturing a culture. The warm, welcoming atmosphere, the attention to detail, and the respect for timeless style—it all came together in every frame. Black & Blue isn’t just a store; it’s an experience.

Alpine Conditions

Mike Nicolaassen

Nestled in the picturesque French department of Isère, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, lies Oz-en-Oisans.

This picturesque village sits at an altitude of 1,650 meters with elevators reaching an altitude of 3,600 meters. Thus, it offers a beautiful setting with access to exciting alpine adventures.

One of its most notable features is Europe’s largest skiable glacier, which promises endless thrills on the slopes. Oz-en-Oisans is the second oldest ski resort in France, after Chamonix, and thus has a rich history.

What sets Oz-en-Oisans apart is its claim to fame: the longest uninterrupted vertical run on the slopes in the world. This unparalleled experience attracts skiers and snowboarders from all over the world in search of the ultimate downhill run.

When the slopes close, head to the Dôme des Rousses for an unforgettable experience and take a final descent. Discover the work of a trail groomer at the summit at 2800 m and prepare before embarking on a final 1450 m descent from the Oz 3300 station. It is an enjoyable moment not to be missed.

The clothing you find at Black & Blue is made to last a lifetime, designed not just to be worn but to be lived in. A perfect fit and the right feel are essential, ensuring that each piece becomes a part of your journey, aging beautifully over time.

To capture the essence of this philosophy, I had the opportunity to shoot a special lookbook for Black & Blue. Inspired by the raw, authentic atmosphere of the brand, I created a series that highlights the coolest pieces of the moment—garments that embody history, character, and a sense of adventure.

At Black & Blue, denim isn’t just fabric—it’s a way of life.

Riding into the Unknown

Distance, fading daylight, and the feeling of leaving routine behind.

A series moving through quiet roads, open landscape, and the atmosphere surrounding life on the road.

Some roads seem less about arriving somewhere and more about creating distance from everything left behind.

This series follows the quieter side of motorcycle culture. Long stretches of empty road, fading evening light, roadside pauses, worn materials, and the feeling of movement without urgency or fixed direction.

Rather than focusing on speed or performance, the series stays close to the atmosphere surrounding the ride itself: the silence between locations, changing weather, and the slower rhythm that appears once routine begins to disappear in the rear-view mirror.

Moving between landscape, documentary portraiture, and motorcycle culture, the series was photographed across quiet roads in Frasselt, Germany as daylight slowly disappeared into dusk.

Spirits and stories

Mike Nicolaassen

Whisky is more than just a drink—it’s an experience. It carries the weight of history, the precision of craftsmanship, and the passion of those who create it.

Like the rugged landscapes where the finest whiskies are born, whisky has a raw, untamed beauty that speaks to those who appreciate authenticity. Hogshead reflects that very spirit — I had the honer to shoot een lookbook for their brand. Standing in nature, surrounded by golden fields and an open sky, much like whisky itself: pure, bold, and full of character.

At the heart of their work is storytelling. They believe in sharing the unique journey of their brands with whisky enthusiasts across the world, not just through words but through personal connections and real experiences. Whisky is not something you simply drink—it’s something you feel, something you live. It’s the warmth of a rich, peaty dram on a cold evening, the smooth complexity of a well-aged single malt, and the camaraderie shared over a glass with friends.

By engaging directly with whisky lovers, they create more than just consumers—they create fans. Through tastings, events, and immersive brand experiences, they bring whisky to life, helping people understand not just the flavors but the stories behind every bottle. From the careful selection of grains to the patience of aging in oak casks, each element plays a role in crafting something exceptional. And that story deserves to be told in a way that resonates.

Because whisky isn’t just a product—it’s a tradition, a journey, and a moment to be savored. Together, they don’t just sell whisky. They bring it alive.

Black Bone - Zwarte Cross, Lichtenvoorde

Blessing in Disguise

Venue: Zwarte Cross
City: Lichtenvoorde

Mike Nicolaassen

Spent the day with Black-Bone at Zwarte Cross, documenting the hours surrounding the performance — from backstage moments to the energy on stage.

A day shaped by noise, waiting, movement, and live music culture.

Black-Bone was a hard-hitting rock band from Eindhoven, Netherlands, founded in 2007. The band was made up of Steef van den Bogaard (vocals and guitar), Sven Hompes (bass and backing vocals), and Jules Eck (drums). Drawing inspiration from legendary acts like Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, and Motörhead, they became known for their electrifying live shows and raw rock ‘n’ roll energy.

Their journey began with the release of their debut album, Back to Mayhem, in 2012, followed by their sophomore record, Blessing in Disguise, in 2015. Over the years, Black-Bone had the opportunity to share the stage with some of rock’s biggest names, including Deep Purple, Slash, and Status Quo, and performed at prominent festivals like Bospop and Paaspop.

After over a decade of rockin’ out, Black-Bone made the bittersweet announcement of their disbandment, thanking their loyal fans for the support and memories they created together.

Black Bottle Riot - Fire

In the Spirit of Fire

Mike Nicolaassen

For Black Bottle Riot’s album Fire, I had the honor of creating portraits that embody the open, soulful, and electrifying spirit of their southern rock sound.

This project was more than just a series of images—it was about visually translating the raw energy, passion, and grit that define the band.

After two years of relentless songwriting, touring, and honing their craft, Black Bottle Riot was ready to hit the studio, bringing their signature blend of heart and intensity to life. Fire is more than just an album; it’s a reflection of their journey, a powerful statement of their evolution as musicians. Every song is infused with stories of perseverance, freedom, and unfiltered rock ‘n’ roll energy—something I aimed to capture in each portrait.

The images mirror the album’s dynamic character—deep, vibrant, and steeped in that unmistakable southern flair. From intimate close-ups to powerful group shots, every frame tells a piece of their story, showcasing the camaraderie and authenticity that drive their music.

Being part of this creative process was an incredible experience. Watching the band pour their soul into this project and capturing those moments of pure dedication and emotion was a privilege. Through these portraits, I wanted to give fans a glimpse into the heart of Black Bottle Riot—where passion meets music, and where Fire truly comes to life.

Roller-Derby-Roadkill-Rollers-vs.-Dom-City-Dolls-0055

Full Contact

Mike Nicolaassen

The match of the Nijmegen roller derby team was nothing short of electrifying—a relentless battle of speed, strength, and strategy played out on the oval track.

The moment the whistle blew, the energy surged through the arena. Two teams on quad roller skates clashed in a dynamic struggle, pushing their limits with every lap.

The jammers, the speed demons of the game, fought fiercely to break through the opposition’s defensive wall, dodging, spinning, and charging forward with pure determination. Their blockers, equally fearless, threw their bodies into the chaos, forming impenetrable walls, delivering bone-rattling hits, and creating openings for their teammates. Every turn of the track brought a new level of intensity—sudden bursts of acceleration, last-second saves, and breathtaking moves that kept the crowd on edge.

The energy in the room was electric, fueled by the roars of supporters, the screech of skates, and the sheer force of competition. Every impact, every fall, and every triumphant breakthrough added to the drama of the game. This wasn’t just a match—it was a display of resilience, teamwork, and unbreakable spirit.

In the end, it wasn’t just about the final score. It was about the thrill of the game, the bond between teammates, and the undeniable passion that defines roller derby. The Nijmegen team showed heart, grit, and a love for the sport that resonated far beyond the track. This was roller derby at its finest—raw, intense, and absolutely unforgettable.
